Academic Skills for Health and Social Care Students

All about this site

Starting a course in health or social care makes the beginning of a life changing experience – so many exciting opportunities, so many challenges all leading to your aim of gaining your dream job.

Incredibly many of the skills you associate with academic study can be transferred directly into practice whether this is in nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social work operating department practice, paramedic practice or an associated field.

This site provides you with a brief overview of just some of these skills and accompanies the book academic skills for health and social care students published by Sage which offers a more in-depth look at a broader range of topics required at university and on placement.

The site is divided into three broad sections that you can see on the tabs at the top of this page.  Clicking on the tab will take you to the a more detailed list of skills leading to:

  1. 2 minute tutorials
  2.
  3. Top tips from students
  4.
  5. Quizzes and additional information
  6.
  7. A template for personal and professional development planning
